Using affirmations did not come easy for me. I was very skeptical for a long time and actually thought the whole idea of saying positive affirmations over and over to yourself seemed silly.
I couldn’t grasp how saying certain positive affirmation phrases (that I didn’t even believe were true) could help my mental health and self-esteem.
But after many discussions with my therapist, I decided to give it an honest effort and start using affirmations daily. To make it more interesting, I created a set adult coloring affirmation cards.
I researched the best way to write affirmations and created a list of positive affirmations to put on my affirmation cards.

My handwriting isn’t the neatest so I typed them onto the affirmation card templates I made and printed them out. Then I took out my favorite colored pencils and my affirmation cards turned out really well.
✅ What is a positive affirmation statement?
A positive affirmation statement is simply a sentence or phrase that describes a particular goal or outcome that you want. The statement is written as if you have already achieved this outcome or goal.
*If you want to learn more about creating your own positive affirmations, hop over to this post where I take you step-by-step on the best way to write them.
✅ What exactly is an affirmation card?
An affirmation card is simply a card with a positive affirmation statement on it. It doesn’t have to technically be a card. You can use a piece of paper, an index card, or a sticky note.
It’s a physical object that you can hold in your hand. The positive statement starts off as a thought in your head. And by putting it down on paper it becomes tangible and more “real” or believable.
✅ How do you use affirmation cards?
Okay, so now you have either made or purchased a set of affirmation cards and you may be wondering exactly how to use them.
1. Say them out loud
My therapist recommended that I say them over and over out loud. He said it’s best to Just pick a few to focus on at one time. I have to admit it felt weird at first to do this.
2. Read them to yourself
If you need time to get comfortable using affirmation cards, then just start by reading them to yourself. This is the way I started.
You can do this in what I call “flash card style,” or just focus on one at a time. The reason I mention flash cards is because that’s the way I was taught to memorize something.
I would just read them one after another but I didn’t feel like the idea was sticking.
3. Focus on one affirmation card at a time
So I tried just picking one and spend a few minutes during the day meditating on it–nothing formal or complicated.
I just thought about how I could make this affirmation statement “true.” Or I would think about what was stopping me from believing this affirmation could be true. The roadblock in my mind–the negative thoughts I had to let go of so I could see life in a more positive light. A light that brought with it potential to be more joyous and peaceful.
4. Hang your affirmation cards around your house
This is a great idea because it’s quick and easy. Instead of having to carve out time during your day to use your affirmation cards, you are constantly reminded by these positive statements as you go about your day–like when you get ready in the morning and see them hanging on your bathroom mirror.
✅ How do you make a positive affirmation card?
Affirmation cards do not need to be fancy. You could write or print them on a piece of paper and simply cut it up into rectangles. You can get more ideas from this how to make DIY affirmations cards tutorial.
Another option is to purchase a pre-made set of affirmation cards.
If you decide to carry them around with you, you may want to consider creating your affirmation cards on card stock.
The affirmation card set I created I have printed on heavy card stock at my local Office Depot/ Office Max. I simply upload them online and have it printed for pickup at the store closest to my house. It costs less than a dollar per page.
My Adult Coloring Affirmation Card Set comes with two size options. You can either print 6 per page (wallet-size) or 3 per page.
You can see from the picture below that the affirmation cards set has some blank cards for you to write your own affirmations.
But I created this set with the struggles (both mental and physical) those of us with chronic/mental illnesses in mind. And created the positive affirmations to address the particular negative thoughts and feelings we often have about ourselves.
✅ Affirmation Card Templates
Using a template to make your affirmation cards makes it super easy to get started with positive affirmations.
The adult coloring affirmation card set I created has several designs that do not have prewritten positive affirmation statements. That way you can personalize them for your needs.
And I chose the simple clean black and white designs for my card set so that you can combine two positive activities in one–adult coloring & using affirmations.
In fact, once you’ve written your affirmation statement on a card, as you color you can meditate and focus on that one statement.
And what I love about creating a product as a digital download is that it’s totally reusable.
Using affirmations is a life-long activity. As you move forward and achieve the goals you set, you will make new goals. When you are ready to make new affirmations, you can just reprint the blank affirmation templates included in the set. *For a limited time, you can purchase The Adult Coloring Affirmation Set at a discounted price.
Whether you choose to DIY your affirmations cards or purchase an affirmation card template set, I believe it’s important to personalize the positive affirmation statements you use. We are all different and have different struggles.
